A pleasant campus atmosphere with conservation of nature in mind
General Affairs Section

General Affairs Section staff
The Wako campus occupies the northeastern part of the Musashino Plateau with its rich natural surroundings. The General Affairs Section and the Facilities and Utilities Division jointly developed the ‘Wako Campus Landscape Basic Plan’ aiming to create a scenic environment for the researchers. The plan is based on ‘a community of knowledge’ as its principle concept, focusing on the natural environment as a source of inspiration.
The General Affairs Section is in charge of campus ground management including the planting of vegetation as well as the commissioning of cleaners and security staff so that the scientists can concentrate on their research in a pleasant campus environment.
The Wako campus has more than 400 cherry blossom trees, which include trees transplanted from RIKEN’s old campus in Komagome and a very new breed, ‘Nishina-zao’, developed by RIKEN scientists. They put on a great show in the spring when the campus is opened to the local community so that the public can enjoy the beautiful flowers.
Green purchasing
Most of the items we procure are legally classified as ‘eco-friendly goods’
In 2008, we continued to aim for a 100% ‘eco-friendly’ procurement rate for about 150 categories of goods listed in the law (excluding public construction) and achieved a rate of more than 90% in over nine-tenths of the categories. For items not listed in the law, we purchased products bearing the accredited eco-mark, making a conscious choice to buy products with lower energy consumption and made of recycled materials.
We also encouraged our suppliers and subcontractors to do the same, and made efforts to raise our own awareness regarding green purchasing.
