The Environment Committee was set up to promote research activities and efforts aimed at tackling environmental issues in a comprehensive manner.
Across the board, RIKEN has been active in promoting environmental initiatives such as those focusing on energy saving, renewable energy use, waste reduction and green purchasing. In the past, these initiatives were positioned as a part of health and safety activities directed at ensuring overall security. Recognizing the need for a more swift and effective response to the increasingly serious threats facing the environment, the Environment Committee, a specialized agency focusing exclusively on dealing with environmental issues in RIKEN, was established this fiscal year. The Committee is in charge of every stage of environment management, from formulating the principle guidelines, to planning, implementing, managing and assessing action plans based on the guidelines.
RIKEN recognizes its responsibility as a research institute in the natural sciences. In line with these responsibilities, RIKEN will prioritize and promote research activities that contribute to solving global environmental issues, through the development and promotion of new green technologies, advancements in plant science and energy conservation, and by actively seeking to share information and disseminate research results.
