3.   Single cellular recordings from the spots revealed the visual features represented by these spots.

Spots A and B represent 'protrusions' and 'curved contour', respectively.  The simplest visual feature for spot D was 'a rectangle'.  Since 'an ellipse' also activates the spots, the visual feature essential for the spots seems to be 'an elongated structure'.  Though 'a rectangle' also activated spot C, but there was no activation by 'an ellipse'. A 'circle' inhibited activity in the spot.  Thus, the essential feature for spot C is the 'elongated structure' without rounded contours.  The pictures represent visual stimuli and the histograms, neuronal activity elicited by them.  Horizontal axis, time; horizontal bar, period for stimuli presentation; vertical axis, firing rate of the cells.
