2. Changes in activation by stimulus simplification suggest that object images are represented by combinations of spots. Left

spots disappeared by the stimulus simplification, suggesting that each spot
represents a 'part' or 'a local feature' of the object image.
Right panel: Spots A, B, and D were activated by the original fire extinguisher, but the stimulus without handle and hose did not activated spots A and B, suggesting that spots A and B relate to the representation of the 'handle and hose,' but spot D relates to the 'cylinder'. Spot C is the one activated by the cylinder but not by the original which includes the cylinder. The extracellular recordings from the spots give explanations of this result (see next).
