C.  Functional structure and intrinsic connections

Hisashi Tanigawa, Kathleen S. Rockland

A: Activity spots elicited by a stimulus
B: Regions with high similarity in
      responsiveness for 24 stimuli
     against the black spot.
C: Terminals of horizontal connections
from the black spot in B.
D: Terminals were superimposed on B.

We examined the possibility that neurons project their axonal terminals to the regions with similar response properties by directly comparing terminal patches and activity spots. Although some terminal patches were partially overlapped with regions with similar response properties (D, Green arrow), there were also terminal patches with no similarity in visual responses (D, Red arrows) and regions with similarity in response profiles without terminal patches.  The intrinsic horizontal connections seem not be related to shaping common response properties at the columnar level revealed by optical imaging.
