Travel Information
This page provides information on traveling within Japan to the ASC2023 meeting.
Our recommended access is to travel from Haneda / Narita Airport to Tokyo station and then change to Joetsu Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Echigo-Yuzawa station. The courtesy bus of the hotel runs according to Shinkansen arrivals, and will take you to the hotel Belnatio.
Timetable for the courtesy bus
IMPORTANT: You must book the courtesy bus in advance. It means that you have to decide which Shinkansen you will take accordingly. Please see the connection timetable. We recommend to use Shinkansen Toki 319 (Dep 11:40 from Tokyo) or Toki 313 (Dep 9:28 from Tokyo).
However, we anticipate that people may have different plans and so we will try to cover the most common travel possibilities below.
Haneda Airport to Tokyo Station
It is anticipated that most visitors will be arriving in Japan at Haneda Airport (Terminal 3, International). This airport locates close to Tokyo downtown and you can be in Tokyo station within about 30 min. Haneda Airport is directly connected to the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail Line. Route maps are outlined in the airport web.
https://tokyo-haneda.com/en/access/train/index.html
In both cases, you have to change to JR Line (e. g. Yamanote line) to get to Tokyo Station: at Shinagawa from Keikyu Line or Hamamatsucho from Tokyo Monorail.
You can search detailed train connection in the following web.
https://world.jorudan.co.jp/mln/en/?sub_lang=ja
Please type Haneda in “From” box and choose terminal 3. Then type Tokyo in “To” box and choose Tokyo and click search. You can see several routes together with train fair. It costs 680 JPY (Monorail path) – 470 JPY (Keikyu) according to your route.
Use of Prepaid IC card (PASMO or SUICA) makes your train connection very easy. It is refundable so you can take back the remaining money in the card if you return the card. See more detail in the following web.

Access to Joetsu Shinkansen in Tokyo Station
Tokyo Station is the biggest train station in Japan but you can easily find the sign of Shinkansen with blue or green pictogram of Shinkansen. Please follow the sign and then you can easily find the Shinkansen gate. Joetsu Shinkansen share the rail with Tohoku Shinkansen in earlier part so the green pictogram of Tohoku Shinkansen also indicates the gate of Joetsu Shinkansen. Ticket is available from the ticket counter around the Shinkansen gate. JR officers can speak English so you can buy in the ticket counter. Or you can buy it from the vending machine. Both accept most of credit cards. The train fare is 6,990 JPY.
Find the Courtesy Bus in Echigo-Yuzawa Station
The access to the bus stop of the courtesy bus is shown below. Please go to East Exit.
From Narita Airport to Hotel Belnatio
Narita Airport locates in the neighboring prefecture (Chiba), not in Tokyo metropolitan. The access to Tokyo Station takes typically one hour by train. Narita Express is the most convenient connection to Tokyo Station. If you are familiar with the travel in Japan, another possible connection is Narita Sky Access / Skyliner to Ueno station and change to Joetsu Shinkansen. (3,270 JPY for Narita Express to Tokyo, 1,270 JPY for Sky Access to Ueno)
Time tables are shown in the following web.
https://access.narita-airport.jp/en/timetable_search.html
Please find the travel connection in the Route Navigator according to your expected arrival time. Select “From the airport” tab, and type ECHIGO-YUZAWA in Arr.

As well as the travel from Haneda via Tokyo Station, we recommend to take Shinkansen Toki 319 (Dep 11:40 from Tokyo, 11:46 from Ueno) or Toki 313 (Dep 9:28 from Tokyo, 9:34 from Ueno). The train fare is 6,990 JPY or 6,780 JPY from Tokyo or Ueno Station, respectively.
Staying Overnight in Tokyo
According to your flight, you may want to stay in Tokyo one night, and take Joetsu Shinkansen to the conference. You can find an appropriate hotel by several hotel booking web. Most of hotels in Tokyo are very reasonable in charge but surprisingly safe and clean (even a hotel less than 100 USD). So, the only point that you should mind is the access to Tokyo Station. Train system in Tokyo is well developed but still take time if you choose a hotel in west side of Tokyo (such as Shinjuku). If you do not want to take too long time to go to Tokyo Station, please find a hotel near Tokyo Station or at least east side of Tokyo downtown.
