Abstract

A review of recent achievements in the detailed ab initio description of structure and properties of atomic clusters is presented. The focus is made on sodium and magnesium clusters. Fission properties of sodium charged metal clusters are described using the jellium model and also on the basis of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Modelling of the fusion process of noble gas atomic clusters is presented. Experimentally observed magic numbers for noble gas atomic clusters are explained in a wide range of cluster sizes. An important role of plasmon excitations in various collision processes involving metal clusters and fullerenes is demonstrated.
